Discover Scuba - What you need to know

OUT Divers will periodically arrange free PADI Discover Scuba sessions to get people interested in scuba. This page will give details on what these sessions are about and will explain what you should expect when attending one.

If you have already been scheduled to attend a session, read on; there's some important information that you need to know.

If you haven't booked yet, you should contact us to find out when the next session is and/or to book your spot. If you already know what date/time the session is and you want to book, be sure to let us know your name, phone number and shirt size along with which session you want to attend.

Because all the equipment is pre-booked in advance, anyone dropping in at the last minute without booking runs the risk of not being able to join us for the dive so be sure to let us know that your coming.

Feel free to invite friends (just make sure they let us know they're coming too).

Details for Attendees

First of all, there is no cost and no obligation when attending a Discover session. You can attend even if you have no intention of ever taking scuba classes. You can attend multiple times at no cost.

Some have asked me why there's no cost... "There's always a catch", they say. Well, the catch is this: If the dive shop doing the session (Kanata Diving Supply in this case) gets you interested in scuba and you subsequently choose to certify, they'll hopefully win you over as a repeat customer and that's good business for them. The sessions only cost them a bit of time and often bring-in lots of business when people sign up for classes with them or purchase equipment. Also, if you have a fun time, you'll tell friends: more potential customers... Simple as that.

This session is not a scuba course and will not allow you to rent or use scuba gear in open water. You will be taught a few of the basics; just enough to try it out in the pool but not nearly as much as you would learn if/when you decide to certify by taking the full scuba course.

Check out the FAQ section of our web site for details about scuba in general and about OUT Divers.

You don't need to know how to swim to attend the session but you should not be afraid of the water. The scuba gear you'll be wearing inflates and can serve almost as a life-jacket if necessary so there's no danger of drowning or injury.

There will be several experienced instructors and/or dive masters present to assist you and you don't have to do anything you don't feel comfortable in doing. You do this at your own pace!

The session starts in the shallow end of the pool where you'll learn to use the equipment and will be able to try it out in waist-deep water. Only when you've shown that you're comfortable enough there will you be allowed (and escorted) into the deep end. If you decide to only swim in the shallow end, that's fine too. Many choose to never go in the deep end at all.

Some things you can/should bring:

Note: Please be punctual. Late arrivals may not be able to participate.

We usually get together after the session to talk shop and to discuss training options. It's the perfect place to answer all the questions you may have thought up during the session. We'll tell you where/when during or after the session.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Discover Scuba session or scuba diving in general, don't hesitate to contact us by email or by phone at 613-843-9921. If we don't know the answer to your question, we'll find someone who does!

Also, if you need to cancel a booking, please call us right away so we can find someone else to take you spot.

See you at the pool!
